Mastering Positive Habits

Albert Einstein’s words below have inspired me for this week’s Monday Mantra, which is about mastering positive habits.

“Insanity is continuing to do the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”

Creating and mastering positive habits is one of the keys to success. This begs the question of why so many people struggle to change certain behaviours.

By definition, a habit or pattern is a settled or regular practice which is derived from your beliefs and behaviours about certain aspects of life.

Are they changeable? Definitely! Research has shown that it takes 21 – 90 days to form a new habit to the point that you do not have to consciously think about it. To be imprinted in your brain’s wiring a habit should become second nature. A good example is learning to drive a car. After a while, no thinking is required and it all happens automatically.

Here are some ideas to help you set the process of creating some new life – changing positive habits:

  1. Be aware of bad habits that are holding you back and make a list of them.
  2. Identify a positive habit you would like to replace the old habit with.
  3. Identify the daily activities that would be required to make this new habit become permanent.
  4. Enlist some help in the form of a friend, partner or coach to keep you motivated and accountable.

By taking charge of your habits you will be on the road to achieving any goal you set.

Say, “goodbye” to the old habits and focus on becoming aware so you open up the space to create the life you want.
